The JGL awards the second Edusi project: the improvement of pedestrian mobility and accessibility in Foietes

EDUSI

Benidorm City Council continues to take steps in the implementation and execution of its Sustainable and Inclusive Urban Development Strategy (EDUSI). The Local Government Board (JGL) has awarded the works for the ‘Improvement of pedestrian mobility and accessibility’ in the upper part of Foietes neighborhood, which thus becomes the second EDUSI project in this processing phase.

The mayor, Toni Pérez, has indicated that “with this action, sustainable mobility is promoted by generating wider, safer and more accessible sidewalks that invite citizens to walk along the routes they currently take with their private vehicles or do it with alternative means of transport such as the bike; and also the urban scene is renewed and the image of a part of the neighborhood is improved in which to date no major remodeling interventions have been carried out ”.

The mayor has detailed that “broadly speaking, the work foresees in the entire scope of action to increase the size of the sidewalks between 50 centimeters and one meter depending on the section, reducing the width of the road and thus adapting the pedestrian areas to the regulations accessibility ”. The pavement and lighting will also be renewed, and all water and telecommunications services will be channeled.

Specifically, the project focuses on the streets of: Estació, Capitán Cortés, Rejoneador Ginés Cartagena and Plaza del Prelado Antonio Bayona. It is precisely in the latter that “the most emblematic and visual performance” of the entire project will be developed, since “it will be completely renovated following the model of the nearby Polop street, homogenizing the urban scene, making access to the homes, gaining pedestrian space and creating green and shady areas ”.

Regarding this action in Prelado Bayona, the Councilor for Works, José Ramón González de Zárate has pointed out that “right now it is a square that is not used by the neighbors, a situation that will change with this intervention and the installation of trees and furniture, which will that people enjoy this space, which will be completely pedestrianized ". In this regard, he has clarified that the current parking spaces on Prelado Bayona square are the only ones that disappear within the project of "Improving pedestrian mobility and accessibility" in the upper part of Foietes neighborhood.

In short, the mayor has highlighted, "with this project we undertake a comprehensive action to significantly improve an area of Benidorm that has a significant volume of residents and intensive pedestrian traffic due to the proximity of three schools in the City Sports 'Guillermo Amor' and the TRAM station ”. In addition, "these streets connect with one of the main park-and-ride car park in Benidorm, so this project will generate a more comfortable and practical pedestrian route for all users of this facility, thus promoting its use."

The Councilor for Works has recalled that the execution period of 11 months and the investment reaches 556,139.86 euros. It is foreseen that "the works will begin in approximately two weeks". Seven companies opted for this action, of which the company ‘Mediterráneo de Obras y Asfaltos’ was awarded, with a proposal to increase the work units and materials of 23.32%.

This project is in addition to the ‘Improvement of pedestrian mobility and accessibility’ in Els Tolls, recently awarded and whose works will also begin in the coming weeks.
