The Governing Board approves the project to renovate and make Tomas Ortuño a pedestrian street between La Garita and Mercado streets

10 October 2016
La Junta de Gobierno aprueba el proyecto para renovar y peatonalizar Tomás Ortuño entre las calles La Garita y Mercado

The performance is valued at about 500,000 euros and includes the renewal of piping drinking water and rainwater. Vehicular access will be restricted to residents and loading and unloading authorized times

The Local Government Board approved on Monday the renovation project and pedestrianization of Tomas Ortuño, the stretch between Mercado and La Garita streets and the dossier for the open tender and urgent works. The mayor Toni Pérez indicated that the aim of this action is to "give this section, more security for thousand of pedestrians passing by every day and improved accessibility." This project is valued at 498,995.28 euros, and aims leaving driveways and sidewalks at the same level with a treatment similar to the section of Tomas Ortuño street, which is already a pedestrian street. It also provides the placement of ornamental trees, and the renewal of water infrastructure, particularly for stormwater and drinking water pipes "that are in very poor conditions because in some cases are more than 40 years old". With regard to vehicle access, the mayor detailed that "may not be moved by this section residents and vehicles loading and unloading in the schedule that is authorized for this activity, so that other traffic will be derived to Ramos Carratalá and La Garita street ". Right at the intersection of Mercado and Ramos Carratalá street, an access control will be installed so that only authorized vehicles can continue to drive until Tomas Ortuño street. Pérez explained that this action of "renewal", the neighborhood of El Calvario is clompleted", and continuity is given "to the urban model and pedestrian mobility that exists in the lower section of Tomas Ortuño, which connects to the Paseo de la Carretera". He also pointed out that this pedestrianization and renewal comes from "a neighborhood petition and traders, and a motion of the municipal group Citizens (C's)", which was subject to the Plan of Sustainable Urban Mobility (PMUS) recently approved ". The project, developed by municipal technicians, has a deadline of two months. Part of the funds for these works come from the 450,000 euros initially reserved in the budget as municipal contribution to the development of the project 'Benidorm Smart Tourist and Sustainable City'. One project, which must wait for the grant from the Ministry of Industry, Tourism and Energy.
