The Cultural Centre hosts the dance performance ‘Atavicas’ as part of the program for the Day of the Fight against Gender Violence
The auditorium of Benidorm Cultural Centre will host the dance performance ‘Atávicas’ this Saturday, November 22nd, presented by the Spanish dance and flamenco company ‘Neira y Santamaría’. The performance will begin at 7:00 p.m., and tickets can be purchased for eight euros at www.vivaticket.es.
The councillors for Culture and Equality, Jaime Jesús Pérez and Ángela Zaragozí, presented the event this morning, along with one of the company's directors, Teresa Neira, and its distributor, María del Mar Marcos. Pérez pointed out that the performance “is a commitment by the City Council to bring the best of Spanish dance to Benidorm, in this case presented by a company from the province of Alicante.”
With this show, the company demonstrates a shift in choreographic style, “delving into more contemporary and innovative languages in terms of music, set design, and choreography, addressing contemporary themes through Spanish dance and flamenco, while also exploring the deep roots of Spanish folklore, all within a Lorca-esque dramatic framework,” explained Teresa Neira.
The show, which lasts approximately seventy minutes, is divided into eight scenes. Scene 1: ‘Last Trip to Granada’; Scene 2: ‘The Sweet Wait’; Scene 3: ‘The Lullaby of the Unborn’; Scene 4: ‘Solitude for Honor’; Scene 5: ‘This Is How You Must Live…’; Scene 6: ‘Freedom’; Scene 7: ‘Lorca’s Women United’; Scene 8: ‘Today’.
The artistic and choreographic direction of the show is by Teresa Neira and Mari Ángeles Santamaría, and the musical direction is by Vadim Yukhnevich. The performance will feature poems by Federico García Lorca with voice-over narration by Encarna Illán.
The Councilor for Culture also noted that this work is part of the programming commemorating November 25th, the International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women, and aims to “highlight the role of women,” a point also emphasized by Ángela Zaragozí, who highlighted that this show “aligns perfectly with this struggle, although we know there is still much to be done.”
Director Teresa Neira stated that ‘Atávicas’ is “a bold and assertive undertaking that uses the language of Spanish dance with contemporary touches,” featuring Lorca-esque characters and “music composed for each of the scenes.”
