Las peñas desfilan al ritmo de Carnaval por las calles de Benidorm

Benidorm has lived its great Carnival night. The clubs of the Association 'Verge del Sofratge', organizer of the event with the collaboration of the City Council, have given everything in a parade that has managed to gather thousands of people along the route and, later at the end of the party, in the tent installed by the Department of Fiestas at Sus Majestades los Reyes de España square.

At 21.00 the parade has begun in which 64 proposals have been submitted in the group mode and five in the individual category. Outside the contest there has also been a significant number of participants who have joined the great costume party without the intention of fighting for the prizes.

After weeks of work, clubs have showed their good work with the ingenuity and humor that characterizes Benidorm Carnival. The masquerade has circulated through the streets Venus, Ruzafa, Herrerías, Dr. Fleming square and, finally, they have arrived at the Town Hall square where the mayor, Toni Pérez, the Councilor for Fiestas, Jesús Carrobles, and other corporate partners were waiting for them. On the stand, the presidents of the Comissió de Festes Majors Patronals and Association of Penyes ‘Verge del Sofratge’, Batiste Rostoll and Adrián Romero; the queens, Paula Pérez and Sofía Fuster with their ladies; and, of course, the grand jury were also present.

While the winners were being chosed, at the square of SS MM los Reyes de España, the public vibrated with the end of the party to the rhythm of the 40 Principals. At 0030 hours, already on Sunday, the verdict was announced. In the category of Groups it has won the first prize and 1,000 euros, ‘Cuento Medieval’; the second, with 800, ‘Fantasía de hielo’; the third, with 600, ‘La advertencia de los Dioses’; the fourth, with 400, ‘Desembarco Viking’; the fifth, with 200, ‘‘ Como entrenar a mi dragón ’; and the sixth, seventh and eighth prizes, with 100 euros, have been for ‘Sombreros y olé’, ‘Explosión floral’ and ‘Dando la nota’.

With regard to the Individual category, the first prize, of 300 euros, has been for ‘Fuego’; the second, of 200, for ‘Franco resucita’; and the third, of 100, for ‘Libertad’.

After the awards ceremony, the party continued in the Town Hall square in the party tent. Benidorm Carnival will end on Tuesday with the ‘Burial of the Sardine’.
