From June 16 to 18, Historical Heritage will offer activities for all audiences around the three assets

Benidorm repeats in the European Archeology Days with the Tossal de la Cala and extends the experience to El Castell and Torre de les Caletes

After joining the European Archeology Days for the first time last year, Benidorm participates again in this event with the Tossal de la Cala and extends the experience to El Castell and the Torre de les Caletes. This is what the Councilor for Historical Heritage, Ana Pellicer, has advanced today, who recalled that "these sessions are directed by the French National Institute for Preventive Research (Inrap) and more than thirty European countries that last year performed more than 1,500 initiatives”.

Pellicer indicated that "these European Archeology Days constitute an opportunity to give even greater visibility to our relevant historical heritage, thus complementing the actions that we carry out throughout the year to bring it closer to the general public while reinforcing the position of Benidorm within of the archaeological cultural circuit”.

The councillor announced that "the Department of Historical Heritage is working on the configuration of the program that will take place from June 16 to 18 around each of the sites and assets that we have included in this edition." As a preview, she indicated that "there will be activities for the public of all ages, also paying special attention to the little ones, who already had a prominent space last year within the days with workshops in which, through creativity and handicrafts entered Roman culture from Tossal de la Cala itself”.

Precisely on the Tossal de la Cala, the mayor has transferred that "our 'castellum' will arrive at these days practically for the first time, since the new musealization project will be recently completed for those dates". A new phase of musealization that includes an archaeological intervention in the surroundings of the main street of the Roman fort, "the first street of Benidorm", and which is included within the actions of the Tourism Sustainability Plan 'Benidorm DTI + Seguro'.

Hence, within the activities planned for the European Days of Archeology, an informative conference on the results of this intervention and the scope of musealization has been planned. To this will be added other initiatives at the site itself that "we will reveal as the appointment approaches", among which will include guided tours.

The councillor stressed that "in this second participation in the conference we have taken a step further and opted to also include two of our most iconic assets: El Castell, the point where the current Benidorm was born, and Torre de les Caletes, classified as Asset of Cultural Interest (BIC) and that allows us to delve into the story about the maritime defense of our coasts”.

"To get closer to both assets, we currently have, and also during the dates of the conference, the exhibitions 'El Guardian del Mar' and 'Guardianes de Piedra' at Museu Boca El Calvari, which we will complement with activities directly linked to El Castell and Torre de les Caletes”, she transferred.

All the information about the activities of these conferences will be communicated at: https://journees-archeologie.eu/c-2023/lg-es/Espana/Jornadas-Europeas-d…

Visits at Easter

And while work is being done on the design of the conference schedule, Tossal de la Cala site continues to arouse great interest among residents and tourists. In fact, during Holy Week "close to 3,500 people have visited the 'castellum', even bettering the records of the previous year." Pellicer ensured that "these figures confirm that the Tossal is a growing tourist attraction, thus reinforcing our commitment to historical heritage as a complementary offer to our successful model of sun and sand."
