The Councilor for the Environment highlights the significant increase in selective collection thanks to citizen awareness

Benidorm also improves the data for waste collection and recycling at Easter compared to the figures prior to the pandemic

The recovery of Benidorm concerning the figures before the pandemic is a fact that is attested by all the indicators related to consumption, waste collection, occupation, or traffic, among others. A recovery that translates into data significantly higher than those registered in 2019, especially in specific and representative holiday periods such as Easter.

Thus, the figures for the collection of solid urban waste last Easter show that the arrival of visitors and tourists has been higher not only than in the previous year but also in 2019. Thus, if in Easter 2022 (from Thursday Holy to Easter Monday) 822,000 kilos were collected, in the same period of this year, the data rises to 837,090 kilos.

Compared to 2019, the figure is somewhat lower, barely 4% less. That year, 873,000 kilos were collected -some 36,000 kilos more-, but the explanation for this slight decrease is that recycling has increased exponentially since then thanks to awareness campaigns and the expansion of sites and containers where materials can be deposited for recycling. selective collection.
In fact, about the collection of glass, only in the five days of Holy Week 54.56 tons have been collected. To this must be added the 13,580 kilos of packaging and the 18,100 of cardboard. Amounts much higher than those registered four years ago.

In addition to these data, this greater presence of visitors was also reflected in water consumption since from Good Thursday to Easter Monday consumption was 152,868 cubic meters while on those same days in 2019, consumption was 139,827 meters. cubic. That is a growth of 9.3% compared to 2019.

The Councilor for the Environment, Mónica Gómez, valued these data and indicated that "there is no doubt that we have returned with more force than before the pandemic and the figures say so." In this sense, she explained that the slight reduction in solid waste collection in 2019 "is mainly because recycling has increased a lot. The awareness of separating waste and depositing it in its differentiated containers has penetrated among citizens to the point that year after year the data for selective collection of both glass and packaging and cardboard paper increases.
She also influences the fact that hotel establishments have changed part of their strategies "and have opted for waste reduction, for example by reducing the presentation of food in individualized portions, with which it is better used and less waste is generated".

In addition, the mayor wanted to emphasize that the improvement of the data is because "Benidorm has known how to take advantage of the moments of less influx of people to increase its attraction capacity thanks to the investments made and improvements in all areas, which has translated as we see in that tourists continue to prefer Benidorm instead of other destinations”.
