During this first quarter, interventions were made in almost thirty enclaves, with some 200 new specimens to improve the urban scene and reduce the carbon footprint.

Benidorm City Council has started a significant action to plant new trees in the city that will cover practically all the neighborhoods of the town and that will last during this first quarter. The first actions have already begun and the rest will continue in the coming weeks until completing some 200 new copies.

Thus, this morning the mayor Toni Pérez, the councilor for Public Space, José Ramón González de Zárate, and the councilor for Citizenship Participation, Ana Pellicer, went to the CV-753 highway, known as the tourist highway, to check the state of the first specimens of the variety 'Morus Alba' –mulberry- planted during the days 23 and 24 of January. 55 specimens of this variety have been placed on this road. In addition to these, 31 trees of the Tipuanas and Jacarandas varieties have also been planted in the same area, which has been transplanted from Séquia Mare park

Shortly, on January 30 and 31, deciduous trees will be planted on Virgen del Rocío street. There will also be a grove of different varieties on this street, including 'Melias Azedarach' and Tipuanas de Sombra.

"All these plantations create biodiversity in the city of Benidorm, favoring the absorption of CO2" indicated the mayor, who added that "these plantations represent a great opportunity to offset the carbon footprint." It must be taken into account that each tree can absorb about 25 kilos of carbon dioxide per year, an amount that increases as the specimens grow, so these new trees will absorb around ten tons of CO2 per year. year".

Next week the action will continue with the planting of a variety of 'Bismarkia' or blue palm trees on Ricardo Bayona street, specifically at the junction of Nicaragua and Cuba streets. Likewise, the plantations will continue in Parque de Foietes and Rincón de Loix.

In addition to the aforementioned areas, the intervention will also be carried out in Callosa d'En Sarrià, Sella, Lepanto, Atocha, Denia, 9 de Octubre, Ermita de Sanz, Parque de la Sèquia Mare, Marina Alta, Avenida Andalucía, England. , Bern, Rome, Severo Ochoa, Italy, the Palau d'Esports, París street, Gambo, Garita, Apolo XI and Ramos Carratala. Likewise, new palm trees will be planted in Colón and Bilbao streets, the CV-70 car park, and Salt de l'Aigüa parks.

Pérez explained that "the plantings have been carried out both in the urban area and in the city parks, so in addition to the environmental benefit, by resulting in cleanliness and air quality, this planting also contributes to generating more urban spaces." kind”.

The mayor has informed that "with the planting of these 200 specimens of trees we advance in the strategy of compensation of our carbon footprint." Pérez stressed that "this action once again expresses our main action and commitment, which is the reduction of CO2 emissions, something that the City Council has been working on for years with different measures such as the renewal of lighting with LED technology, the commitment by hybrid vehicles in the municipal fleet, pedestrian streets, the creation of parking spaces or the promotion of the use of public transport”.
