Benidorm pays tribute to the last two victims of sexist violence

With a minute of silence before the main door of the Town Hall, Benidorm has paid tribute to the last two women murdered in our country by their partners. The cases were confirmed yesterday by the Government Delegation against Gender Violence.

With the mayor, Toni Pérez, at the head, along with the Councillor for Equality, Ángela Zaragozí, the municipal corporation has shown, once again, its firmest rejection of this social scourge that, so far this year, has put an end to the lives of 44 women and has left 45 minors orphaned, a figure that could increase if the two cases that are still being investigated are confirmed. Since 2003, the year in which the data began to be computed, 1,228 women have died from this cause in Spain.

On this occasion, the first of the victims was a 71-year-old woman from Palamós (Girona), supposedly murdered on September 3 by her husband, a man of the same age with dementia problems. The second confirmed case, that of a 37-year-old resident of Granada, was due to the multiple stab wounds inflicted by her partner who subsequently committed suicide by jumping off the balcony.

The Department of Equality recalls that Benidorm City Council has personnel specialized in gender violence who can provide free advice to any woman who feels threatened. Likewise, it reiterates once again that the victims have the free telephone number 016, which leaves no trace on the telephone bill, although it is advisable to delete it from the mobile call log. This service is available 24 hours a day, seven days a week, 365 days a year, and in 52 languages.
