Benidorm observes a minute of silence for the latest sexist crime committed in A Coruña

Benidorm City Council observed a minute of silence today at noon to condemn the latest gender-based crime confirmed by the Government Delegation against Gender Violence in our country. The silent demonstration took place at noon outside City Hall and was led by the city's mayor, Toni Pérez, and the Councillor for Equality, Ángela Zaragozí, along with other members of the local council.

The victim is a 49-year-old woman who was stabbed to death by her partner, a 61-year-old man, last Sunday, June 15th. The attacker, who was arrested for the crime, was subject to a restraining order against the victim for a January conviction, which had been in effect since May 27th, but which never came into effect. The murdered woman, a Peruvian national, had recently arrived in Spain from her home country, where she left behind five children.

With the confirmation of this case, the number of women murdered due to gender-based violence rises to fourteen in 2025, and 1,308 since 2003, when this data began to be collected.

The Department of Equality reminds us that Benidorm City Council has specialised personnel available to provide free counselling to any woman who feels threatened. They also reiterate that victims of gender-based violence can access the free 016 hotline, which leaves no trace on their phone bill, although it is advisable to delete it from their cell phone call logs.

This service is available 24 hours a day, every day of the year, and in 52 languages.
Similarly, in an emergency, you can call 112 or the emergency numbers of the National Police (091) and the Civil Guard (062). If a call is not possible and a dangerous situation arises, the ALERTCOPS app can be used, which will send an alert signal with geolocation to the police. All of these assistance methods can be activated by the victim, as well as by anyone who knows or suspects a case of gender-based violence. It is a duty of all society.
