Benidorm hosts a pioneering innovation center for sustainable water management

08 June 2017
Benidorm acoge un centro pionero de innovación para la gestión sostenible del agua

The facilities also function as a laboratory of ideas

The city of Benidorm has become the headquarters of the first innovation center for the sustainable management of water and territory, the Dinapsis Operation & Lab. A pioneering center at the national level, for which the mercantile Hidraqua - the concessionaire of drinking water and sewerage in the city - and Suez, which has been open to the public this Thursday with the presence of the President of the Generalitat Valenciana, Ximo Puig, and the mayor of Benidorm, Toni Pérez.

The inauguration ceremony was also attended by the Minister of Agriculture, Environment, Climate Change and Rural Development, Elena Cebrián; The deputy of Water Cycle, Jaime Lloret; The rector of the University of Alicante, Ramón Palomar; Senior Executive Vice President Water Europe Suez, Ángel Simón; The general director of Hidraqua, Francisco Bartual; The Councilor for Water Cycle, José Ramón González de Zárate; The mayor of Polop, Gabriel Fernández; And members of the municipal corporation of Benidorm, among others.

Dinapsis will control the integrated water cycle of municipalities managed by water and will consider, analyze and apply innovative solutions to make management more efficient and sustainable and increase citizen satisfaction. In addition, the center will function as a laboratory of ideas for entrepreneurs to expose their projects.

The mayor stressed the suitability of this center of innovation linked to water in Benidorm, because of the treatment and importance that for centuries the city and its rulers have granted to water resources. In Benidorm, he assured, "we have made of necessity, virtue", to the point of making it become a "model of success" based on the compact city. Something to which water management contributed greatly.

The Councilor for Water Cycle, for his part, has remarked that "it is normal" that Suez and Hidraqua have chosen Benidorm to implement a center aimed at the efficient and sustainable management of water. "There is no other Spanish and European city with numbers as good as Benidorm in terms of water management, so it is logical that R & D + I linked to water are made here and from here can be implemented elsewhere."

The mayor thanked Suez for choosing Benidorm "to implement a model that perfects us in water management in all parameters", and that "will serve us also" to reinforce the concept of intelligence linked to public services.

The Dinapsis centor has three spaces. The first, an Operational Hub with the ability to manage, in real time, the services and assets of the integrated water cycle managed by Hidraqua and which resembles an advanced control tower. The second is the Lab of Innovation, it is a close, open and collaborative space where to discover and investigate new needs and the best way to solve them. It will also support the entrepreneurial ecosystem of the province through open innovation events.

The third and last space is the great Technological Showcase that turns the city and the province into a pole of national and international attraction, a mirror in which they will project all the innovative initiatives that help to spread the excellence of the city and the province.
