The new edition indicates effective environmental management: lower consumption of drinking water and electrical energy

‘Benidorm in Figures’ 2020 indicates a very slight increase in population and an increase in tourist offering

12 May 2020
‘Benidorm en Cifras’ 2020 señala un ligerísimo incremento de la población y un aumento de la oferta turística

Benidorm City Council has uploaded to its website the new edition of its statistical publication 'Benidorm en Cifras', a publication that compiles, since 1996, a large amount of data and references that allow knowing "the reality of the city" and the services that Benidorm, a city-tourist destination offers, with a biannual frequency.

In the 2020 edition, a slight increase in population, an increase in tourist offering and a decrease in unemployment stand out.

The present edition 'Benidorm in figures 2020' is available on the municipal website with links from the Mayoral office and Employment councils, highlighting the mayor Toni Pérez "the usefulness of the compendium of all these data for a better vision of the reality of the city" . He announced that the printed edition will be available shortly, but "you can already consult it on the web and find out the power of the tourist destination and the activity of its citizens."

With respect to the 2018 edition, a slight increase in the registered population is observed and a decrease of the national population as a whole is verified. The registered people born in Spain have gone from 66’6% to 65’3%. On the other hand, the native population of the United Kingdom registered in Benidorm grows 4% as a result of Brexit. In the population as a whole, a more mature demographic situation is detected, given the increase in registered voters over 40 years of age, while the figures in Education indicate an increase in those enrolled in compulsory education, Infant and Secondary, to 8,031 total students.

Toni Pérez highlighted the environmental management figures that translate into "an increase in the selective collection of waste: 21 more tons of glass, 19 more tons of paper / cardboard and up to 262 tons of packaging to recycle." The mayor emphasized the management of water and electric energy: "the final consumption of drinking water registered a drop of over 315,000 cubic meters, which shows the good management of the sevice and the good use of citizens". In electrical energy, after the measures adopted to reduce consumption, "a significant decrease of 4.2 million Kw / h has been achieved compared to the figure of the 2018 edition."

Related to the tourist offer, ‘Benidorm in figures’ registers an increase of 999 places in the hotel offer, 4-star segment, and a noticeable increase in almost six thousand places, of accommodation in tourist apartments. The number of places in campsites decreases and, in contrast, the increase in the number of overnight stays in this type of accommodation is significant. On the contrary, in hotels, given the increase in beds, occupancy was slightly lower, as well as the number of overnight stays. The analysis of Benidorm in figures detects a slight decrease in the demand for foreign tourism, offset by the increase registered in the national one.

Toni Pérez highlighted the data of the labor market when verifying a decrease in unemployment "of an average of 5.3%".

The document also indicates the expansion of services and activity registered in online, of 28%. The mayor pointed out that "it is an efficient and technological communication channel that makes life easier and brings the City Council closer to its administrators."

Finally, the document, available on the web http://www.benidorm.org, reflects the increase in the supply of vehicle parking, to 9,346 spaces, and the increase in the area of green areas, by 10% compared to 2016, until reaching 732,310 m2.

Finally, Toni Pérez pointed out that this document “offers an increasingly true x-ray of the governance, innovation and sustainability policies applied by this government team.
