Benidorm expresses its commitment to equality in the commemoration of International Women's Day

Benidorm expresa su compromiso con la igualdad en la conmemoración del Día Internacional de la Mujer

Benidorm City Council has reaffirmed its commitment to effective equality between men and women today, Friday, in commemoration of International Women's Day, which is celebrated on Sunday, March 8, in numerous countries around the world to highlight the role of women in our society and advance real equality of rights between the two genders. At 11:00 a.m., Plaza de Sus Majestades los Reyes de España hosted the unveiling of a banner with a large purple ribbon, with which the Benidorm City Council joined the movement for women's rights. The event was attended by Mayor Toni Pérez, Councillor for Equality Ángela Zaragozí, other members of the City Council, representatives of women's groups in the city, and a large group of students from Doble Amor Centre.

As part of the program organised for March 8th, a packed Benidorm City Hall auditorium hosted a performance of the theatrical monologue "Ella" by the Foromutis company yesterday afternoon. The play, performed by actress Ángela Devesa and directed by Sergio Sempere, features texts by Marisol Ramírez and Asun Planas.

The play is a dramatic adaptation based on Sor Juana Inés de la Cruz's "Reply to Sor Filotea" and other texts, presenting her as a timeless voice of intellectual and feminist resistance. Through a vibrant and combative monologue, the author relives her struggle against censorship, misogyny, and the silencing imposed by the Church and colonial society. Interweaving personal anecdotes with humour and irony, the protagonist champions women's right to education, denounces men's double standards, and celebrates historical and contemporary figures who have broken down barriers.

This morning's program included the workshop "Taking Care of Yourself Without Guilt" at the Jelena community centre, and this afternoon at 5:00 PM, the 25th Women's Meeting of the Marina Baixa region begins in Callosa d'En Sarrià. Tomorrow, Saturday, at 7:00 PM at the Cultural Centre, Silvia Pérez will perform her monologue "Today I'm Feeling Like It." The events will continue on Wednesday, the 11th, at 7:30 pm with a concert by students from José Pérez Barceló Professional Music Conservatory at the Cultural Centre, a tribute to women composers. The following day, a communal lunch will be held at the Sanz chapel, catered by Anémona, followed in the afternoon by a lecture entitled "Women of the Bible" by Manuel Palazón. The program concludes on March 20th with the lecture "Women of Benidorm in the 20th Century" at Casa del Fester.
