The beneficiaries, who received a talk on organic farming, can now begin cultivating the plots
Benidorm delivers 48 new urban gardens in l'Horta, bringing the total number of gardens operational to 171
The 48 people awarded the new urban gardens created by the City Council in the heart of the Huerta de Benidorm can now use their plots. The Mayor, Toni Pérez, and the Councillor for the Environment, Mónica Gómez, today handed over the keys to the garden site, located on Camí de la Parva, to the residents who were awarded a plot in the public draw held on September 30th, which was attended by around 100 people.
The Mayor emphasised that "with the delivery of these new 48 plots in the Almafrà area, we now have 171 gardens in Benidorm," of which nearly 100 are located in this part of the Huerta, where 49 were already operational. These are in addition to those located on Calle Italia and around the La Cala social centre. "In the end," he added, "171 people registered in Benidorm, families, groups of friends, or associations, enjoy the countryside to the fullest and who, in addition to farming, socialise and live together."
Toni Pérez emphasised the environmental and social dimensions of this project and encouraged the garden users to take advantage of the opportunity to have this space for farming "in the heart of the Huerta," to take care of the plot assigned to them, and to use "water respectfully." In these gardens, reserved exclusively for personal consumption, users will be able to put into practice the basic concepts of organic farming that were recently presented to them in an informative talk organised by the City Council and co-financed by the Alicante Provincial Council.
After handing over the keys, the mayor, the Councillor for the Environment, and the Councillors for Urban Scene and Historical Heritage, Francis Muñoz and Ana Pellicer, toured the nearly fifty gardens opened in 2022 in this same area and which are fully operational.
Details of this phase of urban gardens
The initial project for this second phase contemplated the creation of 38 plots, a task left to the students of "T'Avalem Benidorm Jove II" program, who are training in green space maintenance. However, during the development of the project, it was possible to maximise the available space by expanding the planned plots by 10, each measuring 7.5 x 2.5 meters.
