Benidorm condemns the two sexist crimes perpetrated in Jaén and Seville

05 September 2023
Minuto de silencio en el Ayuntamiento de Benidorm.

The municipal corporation of Benidorm has once again observed a minute of silence this Tuesday to show its rejection of the two sexist murders confirmed in our country in the last few hours. This is a 52-year-old woman who was murdered by her partner on September 2 in the province of Jaén and another 46-year-old woman who was murdered in the province of Seville a day later, on September 3. The latter had a daughter and a minor son.

The Government Delegation against Gender Violence has stated that in neither case were there any prior complaints of mistreatment.

Plaza de SS MM los Reyes de España has hosted this silent concentration that has been led by the mayor of the city, Toni Pérez, along with other members of the Corporation.

With these two victims, there are now 42 women murdered in Spain so far this year by their partners or ex-partners and 1,226 since 2003, the date on which victims of violence against women began to be counted. Likewise, the number of minors who have been orphaned due to gender violence amounts to 47 so far in 2023 and 424 since 2013.

The Department of Equality, headed by Councilor Ángela Zaragozí, recalls that Benidorm City Council has personnel specialized in gender violence to provide free advice to any woman who feels threatened. Likewise, she reiterates once again that the victims have the free telephone number 016, which leaves no trace on the telephone bill, although it is advisable to delete it from the cell phone call log. This service is available 24 hours a day, seven days a week, 365 days a year, and in 52 languages.
