Equality recalls the 016 telephone service for victims, which is available in 52 languages

Benidorm condemns the murder by gender violence in Ávila

26 April 2023
Minuto de silencio en el Ayuntamiento de Benidorm.

With a silent concentration, Benidorm City Council has shown today its rejection of the last case of gender violence registered in Spain and which brings to 13 the number of women murdered by their partners or ex-partners so far this year, and 1,197 since 2003, when the victims began to be counted. The mayor, Toni Pérez, together with the Councilor for Equality, Ángela Zaragozí, led the silent concentration, which was held at Plaza SSMM Reyes de España, to condemn this new crime and remember the victim, an 81-year-old woman from Avila.

This last case confirmed by the Government Delegation against gender violence occurred at dawn on Monday morning. According to the results of the investigation, the woman was strangled by her husband, an 82-year-old man who later confessed to the crime to one of the couple's children and attempted suicide.

The Department of Equality recalls that the City Council has personnel specialized in gender violence to provide free advice to any woman who feels threatened. Likewise, it reiterates once again that the victims have the free telephone number 016, which leaves no trace on the telephone bill, although it is advisable to remove it from the mobile phone call log. This service is available 24 hours a day, seven days a week, 365 days a year, and in 52 languages.
