The new distribution of funds of the State Pact reduces transfers to the city by almost 55%

Benidorm calls on the Government of Spain to increase funds to combat gender violence after cutting back in 2020

26 March 2021
Benidorm reclama al Govern d'Espanya que augmente els fons per a combatre la violència de gènere després de la retallada de 2020...

Benidorm plenary session will vote next Monday in plenary session a motion by the Councilor for Equality, Ángela Zaragozí, to urge the Government of Spain "to increase transfers" of funds of the State Pact against Gender Violence to municipalities "and minimum, to the pre-pandemic figures ”.

Zaragozí explained that this motion comes “after a drastic cut in these funds was observed during 2020, which in the case of Benidorm reaches almost 55% and which at the regional level stands at more than 36% and 50% for with regard to the whole of the province of Alicante ”.

According to a report from the Equality technique that accompanies the motion, in 2018 the City Council received 28,813.71 euros from the Secretary of State within the framework of the State Pact against Gender Violence. In 2019, the amount granted was 28,074.65 euros, while for last year the amount was reduced to 15,342.84 euros.

Zaragozí has clarified that these funds "have to be allocated to municipal programs aimed at eradicating gender violence, so these cuts are detrimental to women who suffer situations of violence and who need the continuity of these actions."

"It is not possible to go back in the fight against gender violence and more if this setback occurs with decisions that are different from the consensus and the commitment acquired in the approval of the State Pact," added the head of Equality, who recalled that " According to data from the Government Delegation against Gender Violence, during the months of confinement, calls and inquiries to the 016 telephone number for assistance to victims grew by 43.8% ”.

For this reason, she has claimed "to recover the financial endowments from previous years so that the municipal programs and the State Pact itself are not affected." In this sense, she has stressed that "the City Council will use all available resources so that, despite the cuts, the programs do not suffer any impairment."
