Benidorm begins the renovation of the drinking water and sanitation network on Montecarlo Avenue in the section between Roma and Berlin streets
Once the Patron Saint Festivities (Feste Majors Patronals) have concluded, Benidorm City Council will resume the renovation work on the drinking water and sanitation infrastructure along Montecarlo Avenue, in the section between Berlin Street and Roma Avenue, approximately 400 meters long. This work is a continuation of the project completed in April of this year on the section between Paris Street and Roma Avenue.
This project, which will begin on Monday, November 17, has been awarded to the company Audeca and will utilise the same technical solutions implemented for the previously completed section of the avenue. Therefore, the work to be carried out is similar to that already performed on that section, including the renovation of the sanitation, drinking water, and stormwater drainage networks, the street lighting and municipal network, the paving and vertical and horizontal signage, the landscaping and irrigation system, and the installation of a reclaimed water network, as was done in the first phase. The project was awarded €1,355,814.06 and will be fully funded by the Municipal Water Service Renewal Fund. The estimated completion time is twelve months, with work scheduled to be suspended during Holy Week and the summer.
The work to be carried out includes replacing 338.87 meters of concrete pipe with compact PVC pipe and installing 14 residential connections. “This will prevent water leaks into the ground, seepage, and unpleasant odours,” stated the Councillor for the Water Cycle, José Ramón González de Zárate. The project also includes the installation of a stormwater collection network, which currently does not exist, through the installation of 75 storm drains and 505 meters of pipe with diameters of 500 and 630 mm. This will drain into the sewers along Roma and Londres Avenues, "thereby reducing the impact of torrential rains," the councillor stated.
Regarding the drinking water network, more than 700 meters of asbestos cement pipe will be replaced with cast iron pipe. This will "not only eliminate the problem caused by asbestos cement, but also restore the operational cross-sections of the pipes, which have been reduced over time due to limescale buildup on the internal walls. With the clean sections, water pressure, which has been reduced in some areas, will be restored."
The project also includes the implementation of a reclaimed water network for street trees and for communities to use this water source for irrigating their gardens and green spaces. In addition, the complementary works also include upgrading the public lighting with the renewal of the wiring and maximising the use of the existing poles, and replacing the trees with slow-growing evergreens like those already planted in the completed section. The sidewalks will also feature specific solutions for universal accessibility and road safety.
The City Council, through the Department of Mobility, will ensure that residents, delivery drivers, public transport users, etc., “can access their destinations as easily as possible and will strive to minimise the impact on outdoor seating areas, sidewalks, and the general activity of the area.” Finally, González de Zárate emphasised that this project “was a promise and a proposal from the governing team, and what we are doing is fulfilling our commitment to the residents after the problems that arose with the previous company, which went into receivership and left the project unfinished.”
