Benidorm begins new actions in Tossal de La Cala with excavations in three new areas

09 March 2023
Campaña a Pie de Calle

Benidorm City Council has already started the new intervention in Tossal de La Cala, which is included in the Benidorm Smart + Safe Tourist Destination Plan and which will continue the 2020 archaeological intervention with excavations in three new areas that had not been studied until now. This intervention has a budget of 400,994.38 euros.

For this reason, the 'A pie de Calle campaign has moved there today, led by the Councilor for Public Space, José Ramón González de Zárate, and Citizen Participation, Ana Pellicer, accompanied by the vice-presidents of the Council Neighbor, Antonio Zamora and Francisco Martínez and residents of the area.

The action that is carried out is the fourth phase of the musealization project of this ancient Roman fortification to complete the 2020 intervention "integrating new findings and to achieve a complete interpretation of the castellum" has indicated the councilor Ana Pellicer, who He also highlighted that the Tossal "is a scientific and academic reference from Roman times, specifically from the Sertorian Wars."

The action of the Tourism Sustainability Plan not only provides for new excavations but also "will continue the transformation of the site into a first-rate cultural, historical and tourist asset." The project contemplates the creation of a new route to access the lower square and will install passable glass platforms so that residents and tourists can see more elements of the site and are protected.

With the final realization of the 'castellum' of Tossal de La Cala, the structural restoration works of the fortification will also continue. "The intervention includes the renovation of informative signs, public furniture, lighting, and video surveillance systems" Pellicer specified.

The development of these works will not entail, however, that access to visits to the Tossal will be closed. The actions will continue to be combined with the visits so that those who access the place can receive explanations of what is being done there.

Visits can also be arranged and booked through the email visitatossal@benidorm.org from Monday to Friday until 2:00 p.m. Visiting hours are generally Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. and Saturdays and Sundays from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. Guided tours take place on Fridays at 5, 6 and 7 p.m. and on Saturdays and Sundays at 10, 11, 12 and 1 p.m.

The Benidorm DTI + Seguro Plan is a joint strategy among the Government of Spain, the Generalitat Valenciana, and Benidorm City Council to continue advancing in safe, sustainable, and intelligent governance, promoting the tourism sector in Benidorm. With a total investment of more than €2,950,000, the Plan contemplates 19 actions grouped into four strategic axes: actions in tourist infrastructures and equipment to improve accessibility and sustainability, actions to advance management, smart planning and the diversification of tourist products, the competitive transformation of the city and measures to ensure hygienic-sanitary security.
