Benidorm awards the rehabilitation works of the former Pensioner's Home

07 November 2016
Benidorm adjudica las obras de rehabilitación del antiguo Hogar del Pensionista

The first phase comprises the reform of the structure and roofs of the building

The Board of Governors also approves the bidding documents for the pedestrianization of Gerona Street

The Local Government Board of Benidorm has approved on Monday the award of the works of the first phase of rehabilitation of the former House of the Pensioner for an amount of 90,578.30 euros. A total of eleven companies are interested in carrying out this work, which has been tendered by open and urgent procedure. The councilor for Social Welfare, Angela Llorca, explained that this phase of rehabilitation will focus on "the reform of the structure and roofs of the building," which are in poor condition due to the age of the building, dating from the 1950s. In this phase, which will begin imminently, it is also foreseen the demolition of annex buildings that were later carried out in the yard. The head of Social Welfare indicated that in a second phase it will be addressed the rehabilitation of the interior of the building, including the electrical installation and plumbing. Llorca confirmed that for this second phase it will be included an economic item in the municipal budget of 2017. Llorca indicated that the old Pensioner's Home "is an emblematic building, located in our Old Town, and that for many decades has been a place of meeting for people from Benidorm ". For this reason, she added, "this government sets itself the objective of recovering it and making it available to the public." Once rehabilitation is completed, the former Pensioner's Home will be used as a multipurpose municipal space. In this center it will be located, among others, the office of the Democratic Union of Pensioners (UDP).

Gerona Street

The same Government Board has also given green light to the tendering of the pedestrianization of the stretch of Gerona street that runs between Esperanto and Orts Llorca, which will be done by open and urgent procedure and for an amount of 379,824.28 euros. The project plans to convert this section of Gerona street into 100% accessible, eliminating architectural barriers and leaving sidewalks and roadway at the same height; As well as the installation of trees and the creation of a system of rainwater collection that avoids small floods in case of heavy rains.
