Benidorm joins the commemoration of World Parkinson's Day
Benidorm City Council has joined in the commemoration of World Parkinson's Day, an event celebrated every April 11th, coinciding with the anniversary of the birth of James Parkinson, the British physician who first described the disease more than two centuries ago, in 1817.
The municipal corporation, led by the mayor, Toni Pérez, and the councillor for Social Welfare, Ángela Zaragozí, accompanied by members of APARME (Mediterranean Parkinson's Association), gathered today in the Plaza de SSMM Reyes de España to raise awareness of this neurodegenerative disease.
According to official figures, in Spain, more than 160,000 people live with Parkinson's, of whom around 15% are under 50 years old. Worldwide, more than 6 million people have been diagnosed with the disease. APARME is a group of volunteers and professionals that provides support to people diagnosed with Parkinson's disease, their caregivers, and supporters. The association, which has approximately 150 members, offers healthcare services including rehabilitation, physiotherapy, nutrition, psychology, and speech therapy. They also organise activities such as courses and workshops in crafts, choir, music therapy, dance, yoga, and Pilates.
In Benidorm, the association organises activities at the Tanit, La Torreta, and José Llorca Linares community centres.
