Benidorm awards the contract for the installation of photovoltaic panels in Poniente park-and-ride parking space

27 November 2025
Benidorm adjudica el contrato para la instalación de placas fotovoltaicas en el parking disuasorio de Poniente

The Local Governing Board of Benidorm City Council has approved the awarding of the contract for the installation of photovoltaic panels on the roofs of the Poniente park-and-ride facility, located at the intersection of Puerto Rico and República Argentina avenues. Following the recommendation of the Contracting Committee, the contract was awarded to Imesapi S.A., whose bid proposed an execution budget of €412,137.42.

This project falls under Action Number 4 of the 2023 Tourism Sustainability Destination Plan ‘Green Benidorm’, and its execution will be financed with Next Generation funds within the framework of the aforementioned 2023 Tourism Sustainability Destination Plan. The City Council obtained a grant for this project under the Recovery, Transformation and Resilience Facility, financed by the European Union's Next Generation EU program, specifically the Recovery and Resilience Facility component 14, investment 1, sub-measure 2 of the Recovery and Resilience Facility, in the extraordinary 2023 call for proposals. The project was approved last June, and the initial budget for the tender was €615,222.30. The construction period has been set at four months.

The processing of this file has been carried out through the standard open procedure. Regarding the award criteria, these were designed to adapt the submitted proposals to the requirements outlined in the tender specifications to identify the most advantageous offer. Thus, automatically quantifiable criteria—the economic offer—were awarded a maximum of 75 points, while criteria subject to subjective judgment were awarded a maximum of 25 points.

The project entails, explained Mayor Toni Pérez, “the installation of canopies over the existing open-air parking area in the new PP 2/1 ‘Poniente’ development to house a 303.3 kW photovoltaic system for shared self-consumption, with surplus energy being fed back into the public grid. This will allow surplus energy to be used for consumption in municipal buildings within a two-kilometre radius.” The entire photovoltaic system will be located on the roofs of the canopies and buildings.

A total of 624 photovoltaic panels, each with a peak power of 540 watts (Wp), will be installed. The installation will consist of four independent systems and will generate approximately 462,840 kWh of energy annually. This will result in a reduction of 214.52 tons of CO2 emissions per year.

As mentioned, the work will last for four months, "and while it is underway, a portion of the parking lot will remain open for use so that spaces continue to be available during that time," the mayor stated. Pérez concluded by noting that this project "complements those already completed on the roofs of educational centres and municipal facilities to continue advancing self-consumption, energy savings, and efficiency."

The future canopies will be constructed of hot-dip galvanised steel with a pre-painted steel sheet roof on the upper surface. They have been designed to withstand wind loads exceeding 130 km/h and are expected to cover a minimum of 165 parking spaces, so, taking into account the dimensions of each space, the total surface area of the canopies will cover almost 1,900 square meters.
