L'Espai d'Art of the Town Hall of Benidorm welcomes next Tuesday, September 18, the photographic exhibition "Mission: Atalanta. The fight against piracy in the Indian Ocean ". The exhibition, organized by the Subdelegation of Defense in Alicante in collaboration with Benidorm City Hall, is composed of forty-three images selected from the title book of the same name published in 2013.

The inauguration ceremony will be chaired jointly by the Deputy Defense Minister in Alicante, Infantry Colonel Juan Bosco Montero Prado, and Toni Pérez, Mayor of Benidorm.

The councilor of Culture and Historical Heritage, Ana Pellicer, explained that "this exhibition exposes the work done by the Armed Forces since 2009 in the fight to eradicate piracy in the waters of the Indian Ocean, where Spanish ships are responsible for protecting against attacks maritime traffic, especially ships of the UN World Food Program. " In addition, "also reveals the vigilance and protection tasks carried out by the Spanish military so that the fishermen can safely fish in these international waters, controlling the ports and bases where the pirates act and neutralizing the motherships that these they use to reach the high seas. "

Pellicer added that "through these photographs is told the effort and sacrifice of the military that for almost a decade have made up the endowments of warships and crews of onboard helicopters, as well as the personnel of the Air Force and the Army stationed in the area. "

The exhibition 'Mission: Atalanta' is the crystallization of some of the proposals discussed last August in the meeting between the defense sub-delegate in Alicante and the Mayor, where possible ways of collaboration between both institutions were explored, between other issues, to bring the work of the Armed Forces closer to the general population of Benidorm.

Interested people will have until September 28 to enjoy this show from Monday to Friday between 08:00 and 14:00.
