l´hort de Colón

This house  known as  l'hort de Colón belonged to Zaragoza Ortuño’s family and more recently to Llorca Zaragoza brothers who donated it to Benidorm City Council in 1988 in exchange for building in the rest of the garden.

The sign that is still preserved in the front door, "Colón", belonged to Colón ship, captained by Vicente Zaragoza Ortuño (Benidorm, 1838-1899). He was a captain and shipowner. He sailed in his youth in several schooners, brigs and in two frigates, "Primera de Alicante" and "Barcelona".

He helped to organize Trasanlánticos E. Pi Company, better known as ‘Naviera Gallart’. He led the construction of several steamships in British shipyards, and became the first captain-inspector of the Company.

Among the vessels he ordered to build in 1880, it is the largest vessel of the Spanish merchant navy at that time, called "Rossmore" which was given the name of "Colón". This purchase was held in Liverpool, when Tomás Ortuño, who was Zaragoza’s cousin, was general consul in that city.

The house has two floors and was built by Vicente Zaragoza Ortuño in the garden, which he received in 1885, behind the main house of the family in Paseo de la Carretera street.
