The councilor of the area and two social workers explain to the group the objectives of 'Brújula' project

Social Welfare involves Housewives in their preventive project to detect cases of elderly people at risk of isolation

07 June 2018
Bienestar Social implica a las Amas de Casa en su proyecto preventivo para detectar casos de mayores en riesgo de aislamiento

The Department of Social Welfare has made known the project 'Brújula' among the group of Housewives looking for their involvement in this community and preventive project launched recently. A project that seeks to detect cases of people over 75 who are at risk of isolation and / or exclusion with the aim of acting to alleviate the negative effects of unwanted loneliness.

The councilwoman of the area, Ángela Llorca, and two social workers of the City Council yesterday presented the objectives and details of the project during the weekly meeting of the Housewives, a collective to which more than 1,500 women are associated.

Before the Housewives, Llorca explained that "there are more and more elderly people living alone or isolated, especially after the loss of their partners," who "have a weak family network," who "suffer from a disease that make them be in a situation of dependency, "or that they suffer from" economic precariousness ". Hence, "faced with the challenge of guaranteeing their safety and well-being", it was decided to launch this project "together with the resources and associative fabric of the neighborhoods" to "prevent this situation of isolation and exclusion" and "to put disposition of these people all the services offered or managed by the Department ".

The councillor stressed that the involvement of the environment is key to prevention is effective, and that is why we seek the cooperation of neighbors, health care network, pharmacies, banks and businesses.

The social workers indicated that the operation of the project marks that before the suspicion of some possible case, this one must be communicate to the Social Wealfare Department. Then, the technicians will go to the person's home to carry out the assessment and transfer the possible services available to them.

Those responsible for the project insisted that prevention is key, since these cases are usually detected at a very advanced stage, when the only possible solution is hospitalization in a senior residence or hospital. With this project 'Brújula' what is intended is to act when the person still enjoys some autonomy to live alone by putting resources and services at their reach such as phonecare, home help or day centers, or programs such as' Mayores en casa' and' Comidas en casa '.

Yesterday it took place one of the talks that the Department of Social Welfare plans to make to raise awareness and publicize 'Brújula' project.
