The panels will be installed on the indoor track next to the pool, and the project includes installing a fast charger for vehicles on Foietes Avenue

The new photovoltaic panels that are going to be installed in the ‘Guillermo Amor’ Sports City to supply the sports centre and the Aitana and Vasco Núñez de Balboa CEIPs “will reduce annual CO2 emissions by 105 tonnes”, according to the information provided today by the mayor, Toni Pérez, who together with the councillors for Works and Sports, Francis Muñoz and Javier Jordá, visited the sports complex to learn all the details of the project, the works on which will begin immediately.

As explained by the municipal technicians, the 288 planned photovoltaic units will be installed on the roof of the sports court located next to the swimming pool. From this point, through pipelines, the energy generated will reach the rest of the sports centre facilities, Aitana CEIP and the Infant area of the Vasco Núñez de Balboa school.

The project, carried out by the UTE Puchades-Loch, has a four-month execution period and involves an investment of 282,605.69 euros. The mayor explained that “this investment will be fully amortised within a maximum period of seven years, since thanks to this renewable energy the City Council will save a little more than 43,000 euros a year on the electricity bill, approximately half of the current annual expenditure”.

Toni Pérez stressed that “we are taking a further step in the sustainable management of municipal buildings and facilities, promoting the use of renewable energies to reduce consumption, costs and CO2 emissions and, therefore, our carbon footprint”. The mayor added that “Benidorm is already synonymous with the efficient and sustainable use of water and today we continue to associate our municipality with sustainability through the installation of clean energy generators”.

The mayor has said that with this action, “we add the Foietes sports complex to the long list of municipal facilities that already use solar energy such as the Palau d’Esports l’Illa, eight Infant and Primary schools, the Town Hall, the Drinking Water Treatment Plant (ETAP) or the Waste Water Treatment Plant (EDAR)”, he added.

In addition to the photovoltaic panels, the project includes as an improvement the installation of a rapid charging point for vehicles in the vicinity of the sports complex. Toni Pérez has announced that this point “will be placed on Foietes Avenue, near the José Llorca Linares social centre, where we currently do not have a charging service”. “We are thus continuing to make progress in our Electric Mobility Plan (MOVELE), with which we aim to reach 2030 with nearly five hundred charging points installed throughout Benidorm”, he recalled.
