The event, postponed to this Monday due to the rain, is one of the most massive celebrations in Benidorm festive calendar

Nearly 3,000 members of the Clubs celebrate the Mona Day in Parc de la Séquia Mare

Un momento del Día de la Mona

Nearly 3,000 people gathered this Monday at Parc de la Séquia Mare to celebrate one of the most traditional and massive events in Benidorm's festive calendar: Mona Day, organized by the Associació de Penyes Verge del Sofratge in collaboration with the Fiestas Department of Benidorm City Council. The mayor of the city, Toni Pérez, has accompanied the members of the Clubs in this celebration along with the mayor of Fiestas, Mariló Cebreros; the president of the Association, Jaume Cortes; the queens of the Major Patronal Festivities, Valentina Almodóbar Climent and Laia Zamora Picó, along with their courts of honour; and a large representation of councillors from the municipal Corporation.

Although it was initially scheduled for Easter Sunday, the clubs' board decided last Saturday to postpone Mona Day to this Monday due to the forecast of rain, which would have prevented participants from enjoying this festive day. Finally, the weather has given a truce. It has been good throughout the celebration, which began shortly after eight in the morning and will continue until late in the afternoon, with the participation of more than 170 associated clubs.

Toni Pérez recalled that 'La Mona' is a tradition that each year receives “the support” of the Associació de Penyes and has emphasized the stage that has housed it for three years now, “an ideal space since it is practically a forest in the middle of the urban fabric and allows many people to move around on foot and enjoy this day without any worries other than having a good time.”

After tasting paellas, sausages, sweet and salty cakes and all kinds of food, in the afternoon, as is tradition, the Associació de Penyes distributed 'Monas', (the typical buns), and chocolate among all participants to put the sweetest finishing touch to the celebration.
