Benidorm City Council has called this afternoon a minute of silence in memory of the last case of sexist violence that has taken place in the country. The corporation, which today has held the ordinary plenary session corresponding to the month of July, has taken a recess to show, with the mayor, Toni Pérez, and the Councilor for Equality in the lead, their strongest rejection.
On this occasion it was a 38-year-old woman, of Moroccan nationality, who was allegedly murdered by her husband, a Spaniard, 62, in Sabadell (Barcelona). The man hid her body for two days but finally he confessed the crime to the Mossos d'Esquadra.
With this, there are already 28 women murdered by their partners or ex-partners in Spain so far this year. In total, there are 1,106 fatalities due to gender violence in Spain since January 1, 2003, the date on which the data began to be computed.
The Department of Equality reminds women who feel threatened that the telephone number 016 attends to victims of sexist violence 24 hours a day, 365 days a year in 52 different languages and that, if any need it, the City Council puts at their disposal its specialized services in the departments of Equality and Social Welfare.
