The number of women murdered by their partners or ex-partners amounts to 42 in 2025 and to 1,337 since 2003

Minute of silence in Benidorm to condemn the femicide of a 29-year-old woman in Alicante

Minuto de silencio en Benidorm para condenar el crimen machista de una mujer de 29 años en Alicante

Benidorm City Council observed a minute of silence at noon this Thursday to condemn the latest femicide confirmed in Spain in recent hours by the Government Delegation against Gender Violence, which claimed the life of a woman in Alicante. The minute of silent also organised in all municipalities of the Valencian Community by the Valencian Federation of Municipalities and Provinces (FVMP), took place at the entrance to the City Hall and was attended by numerous members of the municipal corporation.

The victim was a 29-year-old woman who was stabbed to death last Tuesday, allegedly by her 34-year-old ex-partner, who subsequently took his own life in the home they shared in the Carolinas Altas neighbourhood of Alicante. They had a two-year-old son who was at preschool at the time.

With the confirmation of this latest femicide, the number of women murdered by their partners or ex-partners has risen to 42 so far this year and to 1,337 since 2003, when the counting of victims began. Likewise, the number of children orphaned by gender-based violence against their mothers has reached 23 in 2025 and 492 since 2013.

The Government Delegation against Gender Violence has reported that the stabbing death of another woman in the municipality of Torrijos (Toledo) is being investigated as another suspected case of gender-based violence. This comes during a particularly tragic week, which has seen four confirmed cases of women murdered by their partners or ex-partners.

The Department of Equality reminds residents that Benidorm City Council has specialised staff available to provide free advice to any woman who feels threatened. They also reiterate that victims of violence against women can call the free helpline 016, which does not appear on phone bills, although it is recommended to delete it from mobile phone call logs. This service operates 24 hours a day, every day of the year, in 53 languages, and offers a service adapted for people with disabilities.

Victims can also use online consultation services via email at 016-online@igualdad.gob.es, the WhatsApp channel at 600000016, and the online chat accessible from the Ministry of Equality's website, all of which are also available 24/7.

In an emergency, they can also call 112 or the National Police (091) and the Civil Guard (062). If making a call is not possible in a dangerous situation, the ALERTCOPS app can be used to send an alert to the police with geolocation. All these support services can be activated by the victim and also by anyone who knows of or suspects a case of gender-based violence. It is the responsibility of all of society.
