The panels are in three languages, have QR codes and will soon be complemented with an explanatory brochure.
Historical Heritage installs information panels in El Tossal to bring the 'castellum' site to schoolchildren, tourists and neighbors
The Department of Historical Heritage, directed by Ana Pellicer, has installed three information panels in the vicinity of El Tossal de La Cala that will allow to approach and explain to schoolchildren, neighbors and tourists the site and the history and structure of the Roman fort locate on the hill.
These panels are written in Spanish, English and Valencian languages, and in addition to the historical contextualization of the fortress -dated in the first century before Christ- collect the constructive characteristics of the 'castellum' and a plan of the rooms that comprise it. The information of the panels, which were installed a few days ago, is completed with a QR code.
The councilor of Historical Heritage indicated that with these QR codes "we give a space to new technologies, which in this case open us endless possibilities," including "to update the information of the site."
Pellicer stressed that the latest actions of consolidation and enhancement of the 'castellum' have increased the interest of citizens to "know more and better and on the ground" this site, which has provided more information to archaeologists on the structure and functioning of this type of forts during the 'Sertorian wars'. In fact, scheduled visits are being made with schoolchildren in the town, in which one of those responsible for the archaeological campaigns in El Tossal, the professor of the University of Alicante (UA) Feliciana Sala, participates.
In addition to the panels, the Department of Historical Heritage is working on the publication of an information brochure about the site. These triptychs, which will be distributed at the tourist offices, "will see the light soon, coinciding with the seventh campaign of excavations carried out by the University of Alicante" in El Tossal. Like the panels, the brochure contains a recreation of the 'castellum' on an image of 1943, an aerial view of the site and photographs of the consolidation process of the fort.
