Sergi Castillo calls on the mayor to be more involved in unblocking the project and denounces the delay in Ausiàs March construction project

The Council forgets the refubishment of Vasco Núñez de Balboa school

16 April 2025
El Consell se olvida de la necesaria reforma del colegio Vasco Núñez de Balboa

The deputy spokesperson for the PSOE in Benidorm, Sergi Castillo, has denounced that the necessary and long-awaited renovation of the Vasco Núñez de Balboa school remains at the bottom of the list of priorities for Mr Rovira's Ministry of Education and the Regional Government of Carlos Mazón.

Castillo emphasized that more than a year has passed since the previous Director General of Infrastructure, Rafael Valcárcel visited the city, during which he pledged to carry out this intervention, and "we still have no news of when the work could begin." He explained that the renovation focuses on repairing the structural damage to the gymnasium and changing rooms, as well as other work that has been necessary for years, such as the renovation and adaptation of bathrooms, the installation of an elevator in the Primary building, the adaptation of the exterior walls and the Infant School playground, and the complete renovation of the electrical installation.

The councillor called for the mayor's full involvement "to launch this project, since these works affect the structure of the buildings," and wondered where the mayor's words have gone, expressing his conviction that "the new leaders of the Generalitat will be more sensitive than their predecessors to quickly and effectively address the needs of these and other educational centres in our city."

However, Castillo noted that Pérez has been mayor for almost ten years and that there are many educational shortcomings he must address, even though they are not the responsibility of the municipality. "It's about prioritizing issues, and although it is well known that Toni Pérez has many responsibilities in Alicante and among the leadership of his party, public education in Benidorm requires his attention. We hope that, in addition to being the mayor in the photos, he will decide to address the city's important problems," he noted.

Delay in the works of Ausiàs March school

Socialist party members have also criticized the delay in the structural reinforcement and improvement works at the Ausiàs March public preschool and primary school. The deputy spokesperson noted that it has been almost seven months since the City Council accepted the delegation of authority over educational infrastructure to carry out these works, "and it was only a week ago that the drafting of the execution project was put out to tender, and we don't even know when the work might begin." The preliminary project to meet the needs of this school includes structural reinforcement, improvements to the building envelope, improved energy efficiency, and improved accessibility, evacuation, facilities, and common areas.”

Finally, the councillor warned that the Ministry of Education is beginning to revoke powers it had delegated to city councils to carry out the works through the Edificant Plan (Pla Edificant), and expressed his fear that this could affect the financing of the work at the Ausiàs March school in Benidorm. “The president of the Ventorro district, Mr. Mazón, is determined to erase all the positive legacy left by Ximo Puig's Socialist government by eliminating initiatives like the Pla Edificant. Let's hope he doesn't take away our powers and cancel the much-needed reforms at this school,” he noted.
