Hundreds of neighbors participate in the funeral procession organized by 'Verge del Sofratge' Penyes Association

The Carnival says goodbye to Benidorm with the Burial of the Sardine

14 February 2024
Entierro de la sardina. Carnaval 2024.

The Carnival said goodbye to Benidorm last night with the traditional Burial of the Sardine which, always on Tuesday, and organized by the Penyes Association 'Verge del Sofratge', with the collaboration of the Department of Festivals, puts an end to the days of Don Carnal's reign.

Before 9:00 p.m., the supporters' group gathered at the Casa del Fester to leave for the Plaza Mayor, an enclave where the festival-goers in rigorous and dark mourning met to bid farewell to the 2024 Carnival.

The Festival Councilor, Mariló Cebreros, and a large group of councillors have participated in the peculiar parade. Nor did Senator Agustín Almodóbar miss it, nor did the regional deputy José Ramón González de Zárate who, in this way, have shown their support for the city's majority party group chaired by Jaume Cortés.

The artist from Benidorm, Sergio Sánchez, was this year once again the creator of the sardine that, on the shoulders of the supporters' supporters, toured the central streets of the city in a sonorous and heartfelt funeral procession in which, in addition, the queens of the Festes Majors Patronals 2024, Valentina Almodóbar and the girl Laia Zamora, together with the president of the Commission, Mª Dolores Cano.

The supporters walked their colourful sardine around the streets of Tomás Ortuño, Limones and Ruzafa and, after walking along Paseo de la Carretera, they arrived at Paseo de Colón where, close to midnight, the fire consumed the cardboard and stone fish shortly before the clock will announce Ash Wednesday and Lent, the prelude to Holy Week.
