Benidorm shows its rejection of the latest sexist crime committed in Tenerife

Benidorm municipal corporation has today expressed its condemnation with a minute of silence for the last confirmed victim of gender violence. This is a 91-year-old woman, who was murdered by her husband in Valle Guerra (Tenerife) on August 8.

The Plaza de Sus Majestades los Reyes de España has hosted this silent concentration that has been led by the first deputy mayor of the town, Ana Pellicer, and the Councilor for Equality, Ángela Zaragozí, as well as other members of the Corporation.

The murdered woman in Tenerife showed signs of a violent death and she could have died after being hit on the head with a stick. The National Police arrested her partner, a 92-year-old man. According to the investigators, there were no previous complaints of mistreatment nor was she included in the protection program for victims of male violence, VioGen.

With this there are already 35 women murdered in Spain so far this year by their partners or ex-partners and 1,219 since 2003, the date on which the victims of gender violence began to be counted. Similarly, the number of minors orphaned by gender violence has risen to 39 so far this year and 416 since 2013.

The Department of Equality recalls that the City Council has personnel specialized in gender violence to provide free advice to any woman who feels threatened. Likewise, she reiterates once again that the victims have the free telephone number 016, which leaves no trace on the telephone bill, although it is advisable to remove it from the mobile phone call log. This service is available 24 hours a day, seven days a week, 365 days a year, and in 52 languages.
