Benidorm, reference for municipalities with more than 50,000 inhabitants of the Community in the implementation of the Low Emissions Zone
The model used in Benidorm in the implementation of the Low Emissions Zone has been taken as a reference and example for the municipalities of more than 50,000 inhabitants of the Valencian Community at the meeting that yesterday brought together the air quality and mobility technicians of these localities, under the name of 'Sustainable Mobility at the highest level'.
The purpose of the meeting was to learn first-hand about the details of the Benidorm Low Emission Zone, which has just come into operation this year, as well as “request information, resolve doubts and cooperate between all municipalities with more than 50,000 inhabitants to "that their respective Low Emission Zones can be launched as soon as possible," explained Benidorm's Mobility Councilor, Francis Muñoz.
Yesterday's meeting was attended by Txema Torner, from the Urban Mobility Service of the Generalitat Valenciana, who was in charge of starting the meeting. Subsequently, the City Council engineer and director of the Benidorm ZBE contract, Manuel Climent, gave an introduction to the city's Low Emissions Zone. An intervention before that of Jesús Alba, in charge of technical assistance for the project, dealt with “The ZBE of Benidorm as a model for cities with less than 100,000 inhabitants. Lessons learned and recommendations.”
After this explanation, there was a time for questions and answers where some advances experienced in other municipal ZBEs were also shared. The closing of the meeting was carried out by the General Director of Transport and Logistics of the Generalitat, Manuel Ríos, and the General Director of Quality and Environmental Education, Jorge Blanco.
Councilor Francis Muñoz has pointed out that “once again the good work done by Benidorm to have a quality ZBE is evident”, a task that he, as he added. “It now serves as a model for the implementation of the ZBE in other locations with population characteristics similar to ours.”
“It is a work that we have carried out for several years to advance our commitment to reducing the number of emissions, caring for the environment and complying with the Sustainable Development Goals,” the councillor added.
