Benidorm opens Verge del Sofratge and Sant Jaume cemeteries to the public tomorrow, between 9 a.m. and 2 p.m.

10 May 2020
Benidorm abre al público mañana sus cementerios Verge del Sofratge y Sant Jaume, entre las 9 y las 14 horas

Since the state of alarm was decreed on March 14, cemeteries throughout Spain have been closed. Visiting cemeteries was not considered as an essential activity measure, so the cemeteries have remained closed.

Now in Phase 1 of the restrictions lifting, Benidorm City Council will open its two cemeteries - Verge del Sofratge and Sant Jaume- on Monday 11 May from nine in the morning and two in the afternoon, from Monday to Sunday.

Mayor Toni Pérez stressed that "this is also a measure of social scope, which fully enters our traditions and culture, which must be reintroduced into daily life."

In all this time of confinement, the mayor pointed out, “it has not been possible to go to cemeteries and we consider that this opening to the public of our cemeteries is one more step to return to everyday life, also in the spiritual accompaniment of our beloved".

The first municipal authority recalled that at no time have the work been neglected in both venues and that since March 14 different actions have been carried out and with a view to the resumption of visits, cleaning and disinfection, conditioning of walks and public services at Verge del Sofratge and Sant Jaume cemeteries.

The department remembers the recommendation on the use of masks and gloves on the premises, as well as maintaining the safety distance between people, avoiding the formation of groups.
