The Department of Environment of Benidorm City Council is offering a talk today on the ecological management of urban gardens, an activity for which it has invited the users of these spaces in the city. The talk was given by an agricultural engineer and will be completed tomorrow Saturday with a guided visit to the urban gardens. The talk is offered in two shifts, morning and afternoon, to have the largest possible number of users participating.

This morning the first talk took place, which was visited by the Councilor for the Environment, Mónica Gómez, who thanked the attendees for their participation in the activity. Topics such as the 'Vision of the urban garden as an agroecosystem that brings us benefits. Living soil. Our great ally' were addressed, where training is provided on the use of green manure, composting and other natural fertilization techniques; ‘Design and planning of the garden’, on the organisation of the garden, techniques to know the starting conditions, planting calendar, crop rotation and association, integration of efficient irrigation systems and rainwater collection; ‘Crops. The importance of biodiverse plant material’, which includes a workshop to exchange seeds and plants; or ‘The other inhabitants of the garden. Let’s learn to take care of friends and scare away enemies’ to illustrate to the attendees about ecological management of pests, diseases and weeds.

The talk lasts two hours and is given in the assembly hall of the La Torreta Social Centre, in Rincón de Loix. The first shift began at 11 a.m. and the second at 5 p.m. “to facilitate attendance at either of the two”, explained the councillor. As for the visit to the gardens with the engineer, it will be tomorrow, Saturday 12 October, in the morning, at the following times: La Cala, from 10 a.m. to 11 a.m.; Els Tolls, from 11.30 to 12.30 hours; and La Parva, from 13 to 14 hours.

The Councillor for Environment explained that this activity is financed by the Provincial Council of Alicante, through line 6, 'Municipal urban gardens', of the call for subsidies to town councils, dependent autonomous bodies and minor local entities of the province, for actions included within the scope of the Department of Economic Development and Productive Sectors, 2024 year (BOP No. 39, 23/02/24).
