"The best athletes in the world" will meet in the city

This morning the Spanish Absolute Senior 2021 and Poomsae and Freestyle Taekwondo Championships have been presented in Benidorm, which will be held throughout the weekend at the sports facilities of Palau d'Esports l'Illa de Benidorm.

The acting mayor, José Ramón González de Zárate, together with the Councilor for Sports, Mariló Cebreros, and the president of the Royal Spanish Taekwondo Federation (RFET), Jesús Castellanos, have appeared before the media to present a sporting event that, despite the end of the state of alarm, it will be held without the public and under strict health controls, although it can be seen live all over the world, via streaming from the Federation's website.

González de Zárate recalled that Benidorm is "a very comfortable city" for organizing sporting events, as evidenced by the organization of these championships. The acting mayor thanked the Federation for choosing the city for the celebration because "bringing taekwondo, the Spanish championship and Benidorm is a perfect cocktail" to publicize the city and so that many people can go to it to do tourism .

For her part, Mariló Cebreros thanked the Federation for "thinking of us to organize events of this international category", or like the Open of Spain, last April. The councillor has valued the "professionalism" of its managers, predicting "in advance the success" of the call.

In his speech, Jesús Castellanos announced that this coming weekend "the best athletes in Spain" will meet in Benidorm and this means "talking about the best athletes in the world" since our country is among the first countries in this modality of sport. In total, 514 taekwondo players. The president of the Federation took the opportunity to announce that Spain already has three boys, a girl and a parataekwondista classified for the Tokyo 2020 Olympics to be held in July. "We are - he clarified - one of the only three countries, of the 210 that make up the world federation, that we have achieved these classifications."

Castellanos has advocated maintaining the high standards in health security that were put into practice at the Open held in April. He recalled that "more than 1,000 antigen tests and many PCRs were done" and all of them resulted in "zero infections". In fact, all personnel involved in sports or in the organization will take a Covid-19 test free of charge.

Program
Friday, May 21. Poomsae and Freestyle where 282 athletes from 14 autonomous communities will fight, including the Valencian Community.
Saturday, May 22. Women's Absolute Senior Championship. 104 taekwondo players will participate representing their autonomous communities.
