The International Day of Deafblind People will be celebrated in Benidorm with an event attended by Queen Letizia

Benidorm hosts the Assembly of the World Federation of the Deafblind

24 June 2018
Benidorm acoge la Asamblea de la Federación Mundial de Sordociegos

This morning the fifth General Assembly of the World Federation of the Deafblind (WDFB for its acronym in English) and the eleventh Hellen Keller World Conference in Benidorm began, in an event that brought together more than 600 people from 51 different countries, among congressmen and attendees, and that will discuss the inclusion of people with deafblindness in all aspects of society. The conference will end on June 27 in an event that will be attended by her Majesty Queen Letizia.

The mayor of Benidorm, Toni Pérez, along with the councilor of Social Welfare, Angela Llorca, have represented the municipal corporation at the opening of the assembly. Among the speakers, Francisco J. Trigueros, president of the Federation of Deafblind Associations of Spain (FASOCIDE); Ezekiel Kumqenda, from Malawi and Gary Daly, from Australia; among others.

Toni Pérez welcomed the attendees and has shown their full support and that of the municipal corporation that presides over "giving visibility to the world" of the problem of deafblind people to "deepen equality". The mayor has set the example of the "bet" of Benidorm for "universal accessibility". The first mayor encouraged all participants to discuss and provide solutions and, of course, to know Benidorm. "A city," he said, "that feels happy and proud that you are all here." Finally, Toni Pérez has summoned all attendees to share the celebration of the International Deafblind Day that will take place in Benidorm on the 27th, in an event that will be attended by Queen Letizia.

The International Day of the Deafblind commemorates the birth of the American Helen Keller, the first deafblind person to overcome all the barriers and graduated in the university. Keller was the author of multiple essays, political activist and speaker. This year marks the 50th anniversary of his death. In Spain, the International Deafblind Day was celebrated for the first time in 2009 in Alicante. This year will take place in Benidorm.
