The sports federation proposes the city to be the permanent host of the tournament
Benidorm, home of Spanish Beach Tennis Championship by autonomous regions
The first Spanish Mapfre Beach Tennis Championship by Regions will take place in Benidorm on June 25, 26 and 27. This has been announced by the Councilor for Sports, Mariló Cebreros, at a press conference that she attended flanked by the sports director of the Royal Spanish Tennis Federation (RFET), Javier Soler, and the tournament director, Alfonso Bacaicoa.
Cebreros has indicated that the games will be played the first two days "in the sports area of Poniente beach and on the 27th on the court of Lope de Vega international school." They have registered "A total of 126 athletes from 16 mixed teams" made up of eight participants each.
The championship will be a competition of "special relevance", the councilor stressed, because "it is the first to be held in our country."
The RFET has proposed to spread the modality of beach tennis. They have seen "enormous potential" in it. It has 700 licenses and more than 500 players in the ranking. Some athletes who "are demanding to have competition", Javier Soler has pointed out. The federation manager considers Benidorm to be an "idyllic place" in which "perfect conditions exist" for this sporting practice and has advocated "perpetuating" the championship there "for many years."
For his part, Alfonso Bacaicoa has valued "the involvement" of the Department in the preparations for the event and thanked the City Council and the entire Sports department for the facilities provided, giving an example of the transfer of "most of the material" necessary for organization and development.
