Benidorm complements and makes the visit to the Castell more accessible with an audio guide

10 October 2020
Benidorm complementa i fa més accessible la visita al Castell amb una audioguia...

As it did two months ago in the 'castellum' of Tossal de La Cala, the Department of Historical Heritage has decided to “complement and make the visit to the Castell of Benidorm more accessible with an audio guide hosted on the City Council website and which can be access through the QR codes installed on the information panels distributed throughout the enclave ”, according to the councillor of the area, Ana Pellicer. The QR codes and the audio guide were activated last Thursday, October 8, and offer visitors the possibility of accessing information about the Castell in Spanish, Valencian and English, the same languages in which the information panels are labeled ”.

Pellicer has indicated that "this audio guide is one more resource within the enhancement actions promoted by the City Council to influence the historical importance of an iconic enclave of our city, through which thousands of people pass every day and that in 2019 it was the subject of an ambitious archaeological intervention that has allowed us to recover and document the origin of current Benidorm ”.

The head of Historical Heritage has stressed that "the audio guide improves accessibility for blind or visually impaired people, but it also makes the visit to the Castell more enjoyable for the little ones, fully accustomed and familiar with the use of new technologies ”.

To access this audio guide, all you have to do is use a QR code reader, which will direct the user to a section of the portal www.benidorm.org where they can listen to the audios, identified with each of the information panels located in the small square of the Castell.

Pellicer recalled that the archaeological excavation carried out last year has allowed structures to emerge from the fortification that was built at Punta Canfali in the 14th century. Based on the archaeological remains recovered, it is known that the Castell had a wall, patio and cistern, and that a moat and towers capable of housing artillery pieces were later incorporated into the construction. This artillery and the reinforcement of the original wall were key to protecting the population from the frequent attacks by corsairs.

Part of the remains found during the archaeological intervention have been left on view. This is the case of the late medieval wall of Levante and Poniente, a flight of stairs from the 18th century that allowed access to the upper floor of the castle, the closing wall, part of the moat and one of the walls of the Levante tower. In addition, the pavement of the square has been arranged in such a way that it marks the structure of the castle in modern times (18th century), which allows the visitor to recreate what the fortification and the town of Benidorm was like.
