The project has a completion time of 4 months and increases the capacity of the current cemetery without yet encompassing the expansion area
Benidorm builds 176 new niches in Sant Jaume Cemetery with an investment of 185,800 euros
Benidorm City Council will begin construction in the coming days on 176 new niches at Sant Jaume Cemetery to increase its burial capacity, though this does not yet include the new expansion area. The project, awarded to Ergo Construcciones with a budget of €185,800, has a four-month construction period and complements the work carried out last summer, which added 40 niches for €41,633.99.
Mayor Toni Pérez visited Sant Jaume Cemetery today, accompanied by the councillors for Cemeteries, Jaime Jesús Pérez, and Public Space, Francis Muñoz, to inspect the area where the new construction will take place. The mayor stated that “we are continuing to work to add more niches to the existing cemetery on plots where there was still space to accommodate new burial islands,” which will also “guarantee burial capacity for more than a year, while we continue with the work related to the major expansion of this cemetery, which will double its surface area; provide new services, including the much-needed municipal funeral home; and ensure burial capacity in our city for the next three decades.”
Regarding the 176 new niches to be built as part of this project, they will be distributed in two new four-story blocks, each with two sides, providing a total capacity of 96 spaces and 80 niches, respectively. In both cases, the architectural style will maintain the same look as the blocks built in recent years, and they will also be fully accessible, so that residents can visit and/or leave flowers for their loved ones with maximum ease.
The council members specified that “the administrative procedures related to the awarding of the contract and preliminary work are being carried out” and that the construction of these 176 new spaces “will begin almost immediately, so that they can be completed as quickly as possible.”
