The works will begin after the celebration of the Major Festivities

Approved the works to suppress part of the aerial wiring of the Old Town and improve the electricity supply

08 October 2018
Aprobadas las obras para suprimir parte del cableado aéreo del Casco Antiguo y mejorar el suministro eléctrico

Benidorm City Council is going to carry out various improvement works in the Old Town area related to the electric service and with a double objective: to improve the power and to split the supply to avoid power cuts in the area and, on the other hand, to improve the urban aesthetics suppressing the aerial wiring of some streets. The works have been approved by the Planning Committee and Government Board, but will begin after the Patron Saint Festivities, to be held from November 10 to 14, as explained by the Councilor for Works, José Ramón González de Zárate.

The councilman explained that "it is about not altering the multiple events that take place in the Old Town at those dates, but these are improvements that we have been proposing to Iberdrola for some time to put an end to the power outages that are sometimes produced in the upper area of the neighborhood. That on the one hand and, on the other, -he added-, we believe that we must improve the aesthetics and the image of some streets by hiding the electrical wiring, thus eliminating aerial cables ". The works already have the permission of the Directorate of Historical Heritage of the Ministry of Culture to deal with an intervention that affects real estate and public spaces located in historical sites.

De Zárate stressed that "for us the Old Town is sacred and a priority and we could not allow, for example, that the façade of the Church of San Jaime still had electrical wiring, the same as at the intersection of many streets in the area. We want to eliminate that bad image that damages urban aesthetics in such emblematic streets, and although at the moment we will not be able to act in all the streets we are going to do it in Mal Pas street, Santa Faz, Calle Mayor, Plaza San Jaime and Church of San Jaime ". The Department of Works has also asked Iberdrola that in the streets where it is going to be acted in the burial of the network, especially in Mal Pas street and Santa Faz street, the redevelopment is done with the same style and dynamics as in Mayor street, that is, eliminating curbs and with accessibility on both sides of the street.

In addition to this, the approved project contemplates that Iberdrola increases the power of the energy supplied to the area and, at the same time, enables a ring network so that that part of the neighborhood can continue to have electric service even if a booster fails.
