About 140 students between 3 and 14 years old participated during the month of July at the Summer School organized by the Local Association of AMPAs with the collaboration of the Department of Education and Social Welfare, and about 80 have done so during August . This has been moved today by the mayor, Toni Pérez, who along with the Councilor for Social Welfare, Angela Llorca, has visited today Els Tolls public school, where the Summer School is being developed since last June 25. A visit that also involved the Councilor of Beaches, Lorenzo Martínez; the vice-president of the AMPA, Viviana Ankonetani; and the director of the School, Mª Carmen Burgos.
The mayor, who is also in charge of the Education area, explained that this year "all the records have been broken", because "in addition to more children, there has also been more continuity in attendance". Among the factors that have favored high enrollment are the transfer of this activity to the public school Els Tolls and having made it possible that enrollment could be done for weeks instead of for fortnights.
Pérez recalled that this Summer School is "an activity in which Benidorm has always been a pioneer, both in the field of education and family, work and social reconciliation of families"; and has reported that the contribution of the City Council to this Summer School amounts to 42,707.37 euros.
With this amount, students enrolled in Benidorm have been granted a scholarship. Specifically, a budget of € 27,707.37 was reserved to grant 100% of the assistance to the Summer School for up to 60 students from families with severe material deprivation. For this purpose, the City Council has also asked to benefit from grants from the Department of Equality and Inclusive Policies for a maximum amount of up to 7,483.83 euros. The remaining 15,000 euros of municipal contribution have served to reward up to half the cost of attendance of the rest of the participants in the Summer School residents in Benidorm.
Since this activity began from the Department of Social Welfare and Education has been awarded "100%" school attendance, including the dining room, to 53 students who have socioeconomic needs. The mayor has indicated this 2018 has been "the year where fewer waivers and absences of assistance have been in that group of minors."
In addition, for the third consecutive year, the Summer School has had a Special Education classroom with eight students. This classroom is managed by Asmibe and financed by the Department of Social Welfare with 5,500 euros, thus covering 100% of the cost of the service for users.
In the Summer School, in addition to school support, the children perform varied daily activities such as English, traditional and alternative sports, great games, gymkhanas, crafts, social skills workshops, corporal expression, theater or cooking. There are also scheduled trips to the Foietes pool, the beach and excursions.
The Summer School takes place from 9:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. - although it has an optional dining room service, from 2:00 p.m. to 3:00 p.m. - and will be open until August 31st.
