The Environment Councillor has received the Ecovidrio award at an event that took place this afternoon in Valencia
Benidorm has been awarded the ‘Green Flag’ as the municipality in the Valencian Community that recycled the most glass this summer
The city of Benidorm received the ‘Green Flag’ on Monday, an award given annually by Ecovidrio to recognise the efforts of local businesses and city councils in recycling glass containers and combating climate change. Environment Councillor Mónica Gómez accepted the award in Valencia, which recognises the city as the municipality in the Valencian Community that recycled the most glass during June, July, and August. Benidorm increased its total volume of recycled glass containers by 9.8% compared to the previous year, exceeding 1.1 million kilograms of glass collected during this campaign.
Mónica Gómez noted that the city had already won this award in 2021, 2022, 2023, and 2024, making this its fifth consecutive win. According to Ecovidrio, the award is due to “the teamwork of the City Council, residents, and hospitality businesses,” which has allowed Benidorm to continue making progress in the transition to a circular economy and in the fight against climate change, as well as becoming “an example of green recovery in the hospitality sector.”
In total, more than 300 hospitality establishments in the city participated, contributing their share to this fifth edition of the #GreenFlagsMovement, which involved around 40 municipalities in the Valencian Community and 150 across the country. This initiative recognises the commitment of municipalities and their hotel sector to glass container recycling, environmental protection, and sustainable development.
Thus, according to data from Ecovidrio, Benidorm collected a total of 1,248,620 kilos of glass in June, July, and August of this year, representing an increase of almost 10% compared to the previous year. The recycling of these glass containers allowed the town to achieve a score of 3,353 points, making it the municipality in the Valencian Community with the highest score. This achievement will also result in a cleanup activity in a natural area, coordinated with the organisation Paisaje Limpio (Clean Landscape).
The head of the Environment Department thanked local businesses and residents for “their commitment to continuing to contribute to and make this campaign more effective every day” and highlighted that “thanks to the recycling of these glass containers, our city has managed to reduce CO2 emissions by 724 tons.”
