Benidorm expresses its rejection of three new sexist crimes confirmed in Barcelona and Malaga

16 January 2024
Minuto de silencio en el Ayuntamiento de Benidorm.

Benidorm City Council showed this Tuesday its rejection and condemnation of the last three crimes of sexist violence confirmed in the last few hours in our country by the Government Delegation against Gender Violence. These are two children, aged 7 and 10, murdered in Barcelona on January 6, allegedly by their father, who later took his own life by inhaling carbon monoxide; and a 56-year-old woman who was found dead on January 12 in her home in Vélez-Málaga, presumably murdered by her partner, whom she found hanged shortly after in another home.

The City Council has called a silent rally in the Town Hall square to express its rejection of these three new crimes of sexist violence. It has been led by the mayor of Benidorm, Toni Pérez, accompanied by numerous members of the Municipal Corporation, including the mayor of Equality, Ángela Zaragozí.

The Government Delegation against Gender Violence has reported that, in both cases, these are the first victims of gender violence confirmed in our country so far in 2024. In the case of minors, the number of minors murdered as a result of sexist violence in Spain has risen to 52 since 2013, when this record began. Meanwhile, the number of women murdered by their partners or ex-partners since 2003, the first year of statistics, now reaches 1,239 victims.

The Department of Equality recalls that Benidorm City Council has personnel specialized in gender violence to provide free advice to any woman who feels threatened. Likewise, it reiterates once again that the victims have the free telephone number 016, which leaves no trace on the telephone bill, although it is advisable to delete it from the mobile call log.
