The agency is working on several options to replace, as quickly as possible, the transformer damaged in a fire early this morning

The Marina Baixa Water Consortium guarantees the potable water supply for the region's municipalities, despite a serious incident that occurred last night. At approximately 1:45 AM, a major failure took place at the Algar electrical substation, which supplies water to the entire Marina Baixa area. The substation's 10 MW transformer sustained severe damage after catching fire, which also affected adjacent facilities. Fortunately, there were no injuries; the significant material damage and its consequences for the region are currently being assessed.

Given the specialised nature of this large-scale equipment, the Consortium reports that the fastest solution is to replace it with an identical unit currently held in reserve. However, specialised work is required to connect the new unit and replace affected associated wiring, resulting in an estimated minimum downtime of five days.

The alternative option is to repair the existing transformer, a process expected to take at least two months to complete. The Consortium states that work on this option is already proceeding in parallel.

In any case, the organisation has sought to reassure the municipalities and the population served by this system, reiterating that the water supply remains guaranteed despite this unfortunate incident.
