Five windows on the ground and three glass railings will make visible the main archaeological remains

Portuguese pavement on Plaza del Castillo, using granite for the pergola

11 October 2019
Calzada portuguesa para el pavimento de la Plaza del Castillo, manteniendo granito en damero para la pérgola

The mayor, Toni Pérez, and the Councilors of Historical Heritage, Ana Pellicer, and Works, José Ramón González de Zárate have visited again the works of Plaza del Castillo that is being tiled by limestone-basaltic stone known as Portuguese pavement, in gradation from white to black ..

The pavement leaves the mark of the castle wall and opens five windows to visualize what is under the square. From the same mother rock with its natural inclination to the stepped ashlars that gave access to the tower, as well as the closing wall, to the North, two rooms to the northwest and the whole of the dome of the cistern and its watering hole, next to the brook that it became iconic in the square. Three glazed railings will complement the perimeter of the traditional white balustrade, which recovers the blue ceramic in all its components. The new glazed areas will make it possible to visualize the foundations of the East Tower and the walls of Poniente, with its particular structure.

The mayor has checked the aesthetic definition of the square, stating that the windows open on “the spaces that have been decided - attending to the archaeological team and the Ministry of Culture - that are worth showing, as well as the vestiges that are outside the square". Toni Pérez also highlighted the recovery of the pergola and its traditional granite floor, "like before".

The mayor confirmed that "before the end of November we will have certified the entire work in compliance with what we committed to Europe through the FEDER Funds in the required period", working on the consolidation, in addition, of Punta Canfali.

For Toni Pérez, this is “an investment that gives visibility to our history to know the past and make the present understood”.

The choice of the pavement, Portuguese, is based on the great flexibility and malleability, at the time of its execution, the strength and stability of the whole, the permeability, the drainage capacity and the fact of not using cement or binder. Finally, both the heat absorption capacity that favors thermal comfort and its sustainability, since paving of this type is a more efficient and durable solution than the use of asphalt or any ephemeral material, and the economic expense that the execution represents of the roads and their corresponding maintenance is minimal in relation to the durability of the stone and its reuse in each action.
