The managing body of the contract and the Contracting and Secretary departments must now issue reports on what was transferred today by the Economy department

The plenary session for the cleaning and waste collection contract has been called off to evaluate the latest report incorporated into the file today

18 July 2022

The extraordinary plenary session scheduled for this Monday, July 18, at 10:00 a.m., to approve the contract file for the contract for waste collection and street cleaning of public space in Benidorm has been called off so that the Municipal Corporation can study the latest report incorporated to that file today. The mayor, Toni Pérez, has asked the General Secretariat to proceed to call off the session after having joined after 09:00 am and once the informative commissions have finished a new control report.

At a press conference, Toni Pérez recalled that last Wednesday it was decided to convene the plenary session after a Board of Spokespersons and given that there was an "absolutely complete" file. However, the incorporation this morning of a new report has led the Mayor's Office "out of responsibility" to call off the plenary session and wait for the corresponding technicians to rule on its content.

" Benidorm for the years 2022 and 2037 requires much more than a quick reading" of a report, he underlined, after remarking that "I will never submit something to the vote of the Corporation that is not correspondingly reported".

The mayor has remarked that from the local government "we let the technicians work and we follow their criteria"; and he has explained that "within the 10 days established by law" the managing body of the contract and the Contracting and Secretariat areas must issue reports on what was transferred today by the Intervention area. Once these reports are available and can be studied by the Municipal Corporation, the approval of the contract will return to full.

Toni Pérez has stressed that the collection of waste and street cleaning of public spaces "is one of the city's great and important services" and that is why in the face of the new contract -15 years long and a budget of 316 million euros- numerous technical reports have been requested and issued and consultations have been raised with the corresponding superior bodies. This is the case of the Superior Board of Contracting of the Generalitat Valenciana, which has given its approval to the specifications of the new contract.

A statement, Toni Pérez has insisted, "absolutely technical", "very worked", that "has enjoyed a very wide participation of all the agents of the city", and that attends to and covers the needs "of the Benidorm of today and the future ”. Likewise, he has emphasized that the new contract is by regional and national waste laws and the European directive; regulations of "mandatory compliance" and that contemplates "sanctions" for those municipalities that do not comply.

The mayor has stated that the new contract will mean a qualitative change compared to the current one, which "in 2012 reduced the service's human, technical and material resources by 25%". This reduction, he has stated, means that the current service "does not meet expectations" and is "insufficient" to serve "a city that in ten years has grown in pedestrian streets, new spaces and green areas."

The increase in services, he has clarified, will mean an increase in the price of the contract compared to the previous one, but it will allow us to comply with "what we want for Benidorm" and with the regulatory requirements on the collection and reuse of waste.

On the other hand, the new contract also "respects the working conditions of the employees" and takes into account future developments in the city, such as the Ensanche de Levante, the El Murtal Partial Plan or the industrial estate.
