July and August closed with a record number of visitors
More than 55,000 people have visited the Tossal de La Cala since the beginning of the year
Since the beginning of the year, more than 55,000 people have visited Tossal de la Cala, according to data released today by the Councilor for Historical and Cultural Heritage, Ana Pellicer, who stated that "these figures confirm that our site is arousing increasing interest among residents and visitors, who come to this point to see the Roman fort from the 1st century BC and also enjoy one of the best panoramic views of Benidorm”.
Pellicer indicated that "as we were able to verify during the first half of 2022, the influx to Tossal is constant and regular throughout the year, with peaks in visits during the main holiday periods or coinciding with festivities". In fact, "during this summer we have reached a new record of visits, adding between the months of July and August more than 13,700 visitors, around 2,200 more than in the same period of the previous year".
The councillor stressed that "these figures encourage us to continue working on the enhancement of our 'castellum', cataloged as an Asset of Cultural Interest (BIC), and that after successive excavation campaigns and intervention projects it has become a fully accessible site and the best canvas to understand how the Roman forts were organized at the time of the Sertorian Wars”. On this point, Pellicer has highlighted that "our site is the one that has provided archaeologists with the most information on this type of military construction, from an urban, sociological and ethnological point of view."
She also recalled that "those who want to know in more depth and detail how people lived in the 'castellum' or the role it played during the Sertorian Wars, from the City Council we offer the possibility of touring the site accompanied by an archaeologist". These guided tours take place on Fridays every hour between 4:00 p.m. and 6:00 p.m.; and on Saturdays and Sundays, also every hour, starting at 10:00 a.m. and with the last showing at 1:00 p.m. The guided tour can be arranged by sending an email to visitatossal@benidorm.org.
In addition to these guided tours on weekends, there are those carried out throughout the year by schools and educational centers. The last of these visits were carried out by a group of 40 students from the Experience Classrooms of Miguel Hernández University who are studying at the CEAM in Altea.
