The activity will take place this Saturday, the 8th, in El Castell and in it the artist proposes to sit down and share looks for a while to reconnect with oneself and with others

'Mirémonos', the new invitation by José Bravo this time in the form of a 'performance'

04 April 2023
‘Mirémonos’, la nueva invitación de José Bravo esta vez en forma de ‘performance’.

'Mirémonos' is the new proposal by graphic artist José Bravo, who is currently exhibiting his photographic series 'Invitations' in six of the Espais d'Art Urbà in Benidorm. This proposal, under the formula of the 'performance', arrives in Benidorm this Saturday, April 8, and constitutes "a new invitation from José Bravo, in this case not to look at static images, but to sit in front of another person and share looks”, according to the Councilor for Historical and Cultural Heritage, Ana Pellicer.

Pellicer indicated that "the 'Look at each other' proposal is the evolution of the exercise that José Bravo himself worked in the workshops that he taught years ago as a psychologist and that he took to the streets for the first time in 2016". "The dynamics of the proposal - the mayor specified - is simple: two chairs facing each other and a person sitting in one of them with a sign that invites the other to take a seat and simply look at each other".

The person in charge of Historical and Cultural Heritage said that "it seems like a simple exercise, but in reality, it has a certain amount of complexity, since in today's world, marked by frenetic rhythms, we are not used to looking at the people around us and much less to do it to the eyes”. Quite the contrary. "Our eyes tend to fixate on a screen for a good part of the day and this has made us stop looking around us and lose contact with ourselves, with others, and with the environment", pointed out the mayor.

Pellicer has stressed that "with this 'performance' what José Bravo is proposing to us is to put aside the noise, individualism, and distrust of others and of what is different that prevails in these times and let ourselves be carried away. And hopefully, it's not just for a moment."

As Bravo explained, “It is about daring to sit down and share looks for a certain time, which both people consider. Although there are no rules, and the most important thing is to listen to each other and let the exercise flow with each person, it can be different, you are invited to try not to speak during the experiment, or in any case to do it at the end so that this fact does not lead us astray of the experiment”.

And it is that, according to her, she has affirmed, "usually with the verb we will want to control the situation and we will go away from what happens simply by looking at each other, and breathing".

The artist has pointed out that "this proposal has an unpredictable result" since it depends on the reaction of each pair of people. In fact, 'Look at each other' is "the invitation to live that uncertainty, to give ourselves permission to that experience" and "see what moves us."

'Mirémonos' will take place this Saturday from 11:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. at Plaza de El Castell and it can be experienced in three ways: proposing, being the person who carries the sign that invites you to look at each other; experimenting, sitting down and sharing the exercise; or observing the interactions that are generated.
