The funeral procession ended on the Paseo de Colón where the papier-mâché fish was consumed by fire

A massive Burial of the Sardine farewell to the Benidorm Carnival

22 February 2023
Entierro de la sardina. Carnaval 2023.

Hundreds of people said goodbye to Benidorm Carnival last night with the Burial of the Sardine which, once again, and as tradition dictates, is organized by the Associació de Penyes 'Verge del Sofratge' chaired by Ramón Cano.

After 9:00 p.m., from the Casa del Fester 'Diego Cano Enguera', the playful funeral procession left for Plaza Mayor, a meeting point where festive people in rigorous mourning and curious people gathered to say goodbye to this year's Carnival.

The Councilor for Fiestas, Jesús Carrobles, led the institutional representation, flanked by other members of the municipal corporation and even carried on his shoulders the cardboard figure, a work of the local artist, Sergio Sánchez García.

In the last goodbye to the sardine, the Queen Mayor of Benidorm, Angélica Morenilla, her court of honor, and the president of the Comissió de Festes Majors Patronals, Vicente Solaz, also coincided.

The funeral procession moved, to the rhythm of mournful sobs and music, through Tomás Ortuño, Limones, and Ruzafa streets, continued along Paseo de la Carretera, and ended at Paseo de Colón where the fire awaited the fish. clupeiform and his retinue.

When it was almost midnight, the flames consumed the sardine and the fireworks fired a carnival that today, Ash Wednesday, is part of the memory.
